Women’s Health – Key to a Healthy Family

Healthy women ensure healthy families. This was the crux of the message delivered by the United States President, Barack Obama, as he declared May 8 to May 14, 2011, as National Women’s Health Week in America.

The world acknowledges the role played by women in maintaining the health care needs of the family. Women are quick to note any symptoms of illness in their children, decide on the treatment option, and play a major role in the healing process.

However, a woman often puts the health of her family, especially children, above her own healthcare needs. The National Women’s Health Week seeks to draw attention to women’s health, exhorting women to give more importance their well-being.

This website focusses on some basic women’s health issues, and gives information regarding some important medical conditions faced by women.

Weight, Nourishment and Healthy Women

Health care for women not only involves prevention and treatment of major diseases, but also aspects of physical well-being such as fitness, nourishment and weight. It is seen that disorders due to weight also end up affecting the mental health of women.

Common disorders affecting women relating to weight and malnutrition are:

• Obesity – Being overweight or obese not only leads to diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and hormonal problems, but also can lead to poor self-image. This leads to depression and other mental health issues.

• Anorexia – A condition marked by lack of appetite, women suffering from Anorexia starve themselves of food with the aim of being pencil-thin like supermodels. Fortunately, the fashion industry itself is rebelling against such thin models.

• Nutrient-Vitamin Deficiencies – Inadequate or imbalanced diet can lead to deficiencies such as iron deficiency or anaemia.

It is important for women to eat nutritious meals and maintain an optimum Body Mass Index (BMI).

Major Medical Conditions affecting Women

Let’s take a look at some diseases which can impact women’s health strongly.

• Coronary Heart Disease – Lifestyle and stress can lead to coronary heart disease in women. Being obese, eating unhealthy high-fat diet including junk food can bring about heart disease. The symptoms of coronary heart disease in women is more silent and spreads over a period of time. The symptoms may be as insignificant as muscular pain and breathlessness.

• Diabetes – Diet, inactivity and hereditary factors can lead to diabetes. Some women may get gestational diabetes during pregnancy. An active lifestyle and controlled diet can keep blood-sugar levels under control.

• Cancer – Various types of cancer such as breast cancer, ovarian cancer and lung cancer can affect women. Doctors stress periodic checkups for breast cancer, as early detection gives an advantage during treatment and cure. Celebrity cancer survivors such as Kylie Minogue have publicised their victory over breast cancer to inspire other women battling the disease.

Other conditions affecting women include osteoporosis and thyroid disorders. Women are also impacted by mental health conditions such as depression.
