Causes of Osteoporosis

There is no one single cause for the onset of osteoporosis. Instead, a number of risk factors can combine which will lead to the development of osteoporosis. Understanding the risk factors and reducing those factors that you can control, will help prevent osteoporosis.

Emerging Therapies to Treat Osteoporosis

Some new osteoporosis treatments are being investigated and emerging as osteoporosis therapies. These treatments include:
  • sodium fluoride;
  • calcium supplements;
  • vitamin D supplements
  • isoflavones;
  • vitamin K.
There is also new research being done into further medications that can be taken in the treatment of osteoporosis. New medications being investigated include different estrogen receptor modulators and different bisphosphonates.

Risk Factors for Osteoporosis

There are quite a number of factors that increase the risk of people developing osteoporosis. Some of those risk factors include:
  • Experiencing a bone fracture after the age of 50;
  • Low bone density;
  • Being female;
  • Having a small frame or being thin;
  • Being older than 50;
  • Estrogen deficiency;
  • Absence of menstrual periods;
  • Anorexia nervosa;
  • Low calcium intake;
  • Vitamin D deficiency;
  • An inactive lifestyle;
  • Cigarette smoking;
  • Excessive drinking of alcohol.

Prevention of Osteoporosis

The best osteoporosis prevention is to build up strong bones during childhood and adolescence. However, good bone health can be started at any time of health. Some of the preventative measures you can take to reduce the risk of osteoporosis include:
  • Eating a balanced health diet;
  • Including lots of calcium and vitamin D in the diet;
  • Do exercises designed to prevent osteoporosis and exercise by doing weight-bearing and resistance-training exercises;
  • Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol drinking;
  • Test for bone density when appropriate.

Tips for Dealing with Osteoporosis

If you have been diagnosed with osteoporosis, it is important that you ask your doctor for information on osteoporosis and how it can best be treated. You should also talk to your doctor about the risk factors and causes of osteoporosis if you think you may be at risk of developing the disease. People with osteoporosis need to take good care of their bones and avoid anything that may lead to a fracture. Dangerous activities that may cause hip or spine fractures should be completely avoided. Take the medications that have been prescribed and follow your doctor's suggested osteoporosis treatment.
