Cervical Cancer Treatment

To decide on cervical cancer treatment, the most important factor is to know the extent of the disease, the stages of cervical cancer is the most decisive factor in selecting the treatments available.
If the cancer is restricted only to the cervix area then surgery can be one possible solution whereas if the cancer has spread to the more near places then going for more intensive treatment is required.
Conization
It is both curative and diagnostic tool to treat cervical cancer. In this procedure thin tissue from the cervical area is cut in the form of a cone, and the procedure uses a cold knife so that there is no effect on the findings. The cone biopsy can be done in the deeper areas of the cervix. The surgeon can remove the entire area of the tissue and therefore it is the most feasible and practical cure during the pre-cancerous symptoms. As the procedure is painful local or general anesthesia is given to the patient.

As the name suggests laser surgery is the cervical cancer surgery that uses high beam of light, the area with the abnormal cells is cut off and destroyed by the intense light rays. The abnormal cells are destroyed and new healthy cells can grow in. Laser surgery can cause pain similar to cramps and discharge for several weeks after the treatment. Mostly it involves two cycles to completely destroy the abnormal cells.
Cryosurgery
Cryosurgery is similar to laser surgery and causes pain in the procedure similar to cramps. Cryosurgery affects greater area than laser surgery. The instrument used freezes the outer area of the cervix destroying the abnormal cells. The freeze is done using carbon dioxide or nitrous oxide.
Other
Other treatments available for curing cervical cancer are hysterectomy (removing the uterus and cervix by surgery) and electrocautery (uses electric rod to burn abnormal cells.

Diagnosis of Cervical Cancer

Cervical cancer can be diagnosed by:
  • Pap test (Pap Smear): This is the most common test for early test of cervical cancer where tissue from the cervix area is examined. Liquid bases cytology is one of the new medical procedure also known as thin prep or autocyte that removes mucous, bacteria, yeast and pus from cervix as a sample for examination
  • Biopsy: Removal of cells from cervix and then testing for the presence of carcinoma
  • Colposcopy: It is similar to a telescope that is used to closely study the cervix to find the abnormal cells around the area
  • Leep or electro surgical excision procedure that uses an electric wire loop that takes off thin tissue of outer area of cervix for examining
  • Conization: Also known as cone biopsy goes more deep in the tissues and then the tissues are examined for detection of abnormal cells
  • Dilation and curettage: The process is similar to conization where the tissue are taken from the deeper side at the endometrium, as the examination goes deep through cervical canal to uterus
