Expecting Mothers Urged to Take Part in Cord Blood Programs

Ten years ago, mothers would have never expected that their child’s umbilical cord blood could ever be a rich source of stem cells. Now, researchers have proved that the stem cells found in umbilical cord blood can be used to treat a wide variety of life-threatening diseases. As a result, doctors are now urging expecting parents to participate in a cord blood program, in which their child’s cord blood would be banked in case they themselves or a family member ever needs a stem cell transplant. By taking part in a cord blood program, expecting parents can ensure a healthy future for their own child or the child of a family member. There is also the option of public cord blood banks. When parents choose to solely donate their child’s cord blood, it is stored in a public bank, where it becomes available to anyone who is a match. In many hospital, they are doing Cord Blood Banking Services where they collect the cord blood and menstrual blood and store it.

The number of diseases that can be treated with cord blood continues to grow. Currently, there are 75 conditions that are treatable by cord blood, including leukemia and sickle cell disease, in addition to many other life-threatening disorders and illnesses.

Researchers are also looking for new ways to apply this treatment method and have been successful with clinical trials for brain injuries. As the list of treatable diseases continues to grow, so does the likelihood that a family will need a stem cell transplant at some point in the future.
