Menstruation and Pregnancy

When a woman is pregnant, menstruation usually stops. This means that the absence of a menstrual discharge is usually taken to mean that a woman is pregnant, and the continuance of a menstrual discharge is taken to mean that a woman is not pregnant. However, there are many reasons why a woman may have her menstrual cycle delayed or stopped, and the absence of menstruation does not always mean that a woman is pregnant. Also, a woman who is pregnant may still have some menstrual discharge. This is not always a cause for concern, but a pregnant woman who still has bleeding should consult her doctor.

Practical Aspects of Menstruation

A women's first period usually occurs between the ages of eleven and fourteen, however any time between the ages of nine and fifteen is considered normal. It may take some time for the menstruation process to settle into a regular cycle. Usually the menstruation cycle lasts around 28 days and periods should come at a regular time at the same time every cycle.

However, many people may have shorter cycle or more irregular cycles. Also, a variety of factors may affect or change the menstruation cycle. Menstruation bleeding can last from two to eight days, with a combination of heavy bleeding and light bleeding. Again, different women will have different amounts of times of bleeding.

When Should You Visit Your Doctor Regarding Menstruation?

Many women worry unnecessarily about their menstruation cycle, thinking they have abnormal menstruation, when in fact they have a very healthy menstruation cycle. However, if you are worried, it is always worthwhile to discuss your concerns with your doctor who, if nothing else, can set your mind at rest. You should also consult your doctor for any of the following reasons.
  • When menstruation has not started by the age of 16.
  • When there is excessive bleeding.
  • When there are severe abdominal cramps or other PMS symptoms.
  • When menstruation causes depression.
  • When bleeding occurs during pregnancy.
  • When menstruation cycles continue to be irregular for a lengthy period of time, without any explanation.
  • When menstruation changes may signify the onset of menopause.
For menstruation and pregnancy issues you can also consult a family planning clinic, who will be able to give you information and advice. It is important to remember though that every woman has a different menstruation cycle and just because your menstruation cycle does not follow the pattern of others does not mean it is not healthy menstruation.
