Ovarian Cancer - Identification And Treatment OptionsAbnormal growth of tissues in human body can lead to the development of cancer in various parts and organs in human body. Ovarian cancer can develop in the ovaries it is mostly common in advance age in females.
Ovarian cancer begins from the ovaries that are the primary area of eggs that leads to forming babies as well as this is the prime area of hormonal production (estrogen and progesterone) in females.
Ovaries are mainly consisted of three categories of cells (Germ cells, Stromal cells and epithelial cells). The tumor might occur in any of the three categories in which Cancerous epithelial tumor or carcinomas are the most common ovarian cancer. Data suggests that about 90% of ovarian cancers are epithelial ovarian carcinomas. About 5% of ovarian cancers are germ cell tumors. Stromal tumors are mostly found in women over 50-age scale, but some occur in young girls. Ovarian cancer warning signs are mostly heard at a later stage that lefts it undiagnosed for a longer period of time.Is it Possible to Survive Ovarian Cancer if Found Early?
Ovarian cancer prognosis in cancer institutes and treatment centers firmly believe that surviving ovarian cancer is high if it is diagnosed at early stage. Ovarian cancer is divided into four stages, stage I and II and effectively curable and surviving at this stage is as high as 70-95%. Stage III and IV though are later or advance stage of ovarian cancer and thereby the survival percentage reduces to 30%. Early detection undoubtedly can assist in treatment especially if family history is made known to the doctor before going ahead with the treatment. Clinical trials and new drug and treatment combined together can increase the survival span in women.Symptoms of Ovarian CancerThe most alarming factor of ovarian cancer is the absence of symptoms that can point at the disease. Report suggest that only 25% of women affected from ovarian cancer are diagnosed at early stage, else most of the time the disease is discovered at a much advance stage.
Following symptoms or few signs of ovarian cancer is: - Indigestion, gas and constipation
- Feeling of fullness even after light meal
- Cramping and Bloating
- Discomfort in lower back and abdomen
- Frequent urination
- Sudden change in bowel habit
- Nausea or vomiting
- Loss of appetite
- Fatigue
- Sudden change in weight (Loss/ Gain)
- Painful intercourse
- Vaginal bleeding in post-menopausal women
Stages of Ovarian CancerOvarian cancer is staged into four stages; depending on the level or stage the treatment and survival parameters are based. The different stages are discussed below:Stage I:Stage one is the initial stage for detection and the most positive parameter for the treatment. If the cancer is diagnosed at this stage it means that the carcinoma development is restricted to just one ovary or both. Stage II:
Stage II is little more progression by the carcinoma cells, Stage II of ovarian cancer points that cancer has started spreading and has spread to other areas near the pelvic region such as uterus and fallopian tubes. This stage though still holds hope of recovery and prolonged life yet the spread might need advance treatment to stop it to move in the later advance stage. Diagnosed at this stage the survival is mostly reduced to 70-75%.Stage III:As the stages advance the extensiveness of the disease increases, the hindrance in the treatment at this stage is multifold. Stage III indicates that the cancer has spread towards the lining of the abdomen or the lymph nodes of the abdomen. This is the actual stage for identifying cancer in ovaries. By this time, time has already lapsed and the disease shows its effects more clearly. Identifying or getting diagnosed at this stage needs a combination of treatment immediately.Stage IV:
As the stage itself states it is the last stage in ovarian cancer, stage IV is clearly the last stage of advancement in ovarian cancer. The person by this time has the carcinoma cells spread across organs beyond abdomen may be to liver and lungs. At this stage the treatment is most complicated as the spread of the disease is more and hence an extensive treatment is required to come out of this stage. The survival factor gets a setback at this stage and mostly reduced to 25-30%.
