Fibroids Can Be Large or Small! But, Their Impact is Disastrous

Fibroids or Uterine Fibroids also known as cancerous myomas are benign or non-cancerous tissues that grow on or within the area of uterus. Cells that form muscles of the uterus mostly form them. Fibroids are common in women from the age of 30-50.
The most common symptoms associated with fibroids are painful periods, back pain, heavy bleeding during menstruation and pain during intercourse. The size of the fibroids are variable they can be negligibly small or as huge as ball.

Who has the Risk of Contacting Fibroids?

Fibroids are more common in women in childbearing age. The researches for finding more risk factors that can determine the cause of fibroids are still on. Some risk factors that have been assertive on the following factors:
  • Obesity could be one of the reason for development of fibroids
  • Over weight is also seen as one of the contributing factors
  • African American women are more vulnerable to fibroid development
  • Women have not been pregnant till late age might also develop fibroids
  • African American women are more prone to fibroid development at young age

Do Fibroids Lead to other Complications?

Certain complications are associated with fibroids they could be:
Anaemia
Growth of fibroids leads to heavy menstrual bleeding, as the result of heavy bleeding Anaemia is the most common complication arising from it. The person feels pale, fatigue and tired because of aneamia.
Problems during Urination
The size of fibroid varies, fibroids that are large in size and can be few inches big in the uterus affects urination as the bulge is against the bladder causing discomfort, uneasiness and feeling of fullness.
Fibroids and Infertility
Presence of the benign tumor in the uterus hinders the placement of eggs. There is high possibility of the egg to get dislocated as a result. This makes successful implantation difficult and leads to infertility.
Premature Delivery and Miscarriage
Fibroids and pregnancy gets interconnected if there is a growth during pregnancy, at times placenta is pushed because of fibroid development reducing flow of blood. At times the fibroids grow along with the developing baby almost like competing for space. Growing in size within in the uterus results in premature delivery or miscarriage.

Can Fibroids turn into Cancer?

Often it is believed that all tumors some way or the other are related to cancer. Women with tumor in uterus are more pessimistic thinking the tumor as cancerous. It has been proved and well researched that Fibroids are non-cancerous and they have no associations with cancer. They are benign and any one who has been treated for fibroids hold no risk of cancer for the same.

Types of Fibroids

Fibroids are categorized from the place or area where they develop. The different types of fibroids are as listed below:
Intramural Fibroids
These fibroids grow within the muscular wall of the womb.
Subserosal Fibroids
These fibroids tends grow outwards, towards the pelvic cavity from the outside wall of the womb. The size of the fibroid of this category is larger than the rest.
Submucosal Fibroids
Growing from the inner wall of the womb these fibroids takes up the space within the uterus and affects pregnancy.
Cervical Fibroids
Cervical fibroids grow in the wall of the cervix very near to the neck of the womb and are quite complicated to eliminate without damaging the adjacent area.

Symptoms of Fibroid Tumors

Fibroid tumor symptoms are specific symptoms that results in identifying it, the Symptoms of fibroid tumors are listed below:
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Heavy bleeding during periods
  • Constipation and pain in passing urine
  • Several Miscarriage
  • Anemia
  • Pain in back
  • Pelvic pressure or feeling of fullness
  • Early onset of labor in pregnancy
  • Infertility
  • Swelling in abdomen

Causes of Fibroids

The main causes of fibroids are not known yet it is believed that oestrogen makes the fibroid grow. Environment, Hormonal imbalances or genetic could be some of the causes that might develop fibroids. At times all the reasons together might cause the development of fibroids.

Diagnosis of Fibroid Tumors

Diagnosis of fibroids can be done in several ways:
  • Internal diagnosis of the womb to check the growth as an increased size points to existence of fibroids
  • Ultra sound is one of the most effective diagnostic tool that can confirm the presence of fibroids
  • MRI scan is suggested when the fibroid is large and makes ultra sound difficult
  • Endometrial biopsy in which a small tissue is taken and tested for the existence of fibroid
